Don't Smear Clinton's Muslim Aide

Denise Peterson

This letter to the editor was published in the Wisconsin State Journal on Sept. 10, 2016.

A recent letter to the editor described Hillary Clinton’s aide Huma Abedin as having “radical ideas” because her name used to appear as an assistant editor on the academic journal edited by her mother.

This journal, described as moderate by American scholars, covers a range of views including authors who support traditional views on marriage and the role of women. (Couldn’t we say the same thing about some Christian churches?)

Donald Trump supporters have also described Abedin as a “Saudi asset” and linked her to the Muslim Brotherhood. Since the Saudi’s banned the Brotherhood, they might want to check their facts. There is no evidence of dangerous radicalism or that she poses a security risk. Abedin is attacked simply because she’s a Muslim working for Clinton.

Here’s a fact -- 50 prominent Republicans with years of experience in the field of national security cosigned a letter describing Donald Trump as “reckless” and stating "He is unable or unwilling to separate truth from falsehood.”

The real threat to our country comes when we are divided by lies and innuendo and the people who spread them.
